What is kindness anyway?
Being friendly, generous, or considerate towards others around us, I describe kindness as a figure of speech; true kindness is about seeing the world through our soul and measuring ourselves against it. That, to me, is what truly defines empathy.
Forming empathy through our vision isn’t a myth but rather the essence of being a human being. Similarly, I perceive empathy and kindness as a parallel harmony; they are a huge part of our emotional intelligence. Our self-awareness, social awareness, and self-management a great parameters of understanding the depths of situations around us; it is how we make sense of why people act the way they do and the actual sense of situation that isn’t visible to our naked eye. This is what I term as seeing with the soul , a simplistic annotation of empathy being a form of vision.
When we talk about vision, our minds instinctively go to the physical act of seeing. We often equate vision with clarity, perception, and awareness of the external world. But what if true sight is what extends beyond the eyes? What if empathy, the ability to understand and share the feelings of others around us, can be considered a form of vision?
This question has invited us to reimagine how we perceive reality. While our eyes might provide a window to the material world, empathy, on the other hand, provides a way to access the inner landscapes of human experience. So it is better to comprehend that emotional intelligence is an alternative lens through which we can understand not just individuals, but the broader world around us.
Beyond the Five Senses: A Sixth Sense of Connection.
Emotional intelligence, in simpler terms, is the ability to perceive emotions, interpret subtle cues, and respond with sensitivity, yielding a deeper dimension to perception.
Empathy as a form of vision allows us to ‘see’ what words aren’t able to express. This includes the fatigue behind a forced smile, the unspoken tension in a room, and the joy and happiness radiating from someone’s small victories.
In these moments, empathy operates as a vision of the soul, helping us to map terrains that logic alone cannot chart.
The Power that Empathy Holds:
When empathy is ingrained in everyone’s vision, it has the power to reshape societies. History has proven that social progress often begins when people expand their vision to include the suffering or struggles of others, too. Movements for justice, equality, and human rights haven’t protested out of thin air but rather because of the ability to feel others’ reality as if we are the ones living it.
In workplaces, empathy helps build a culture of trust where innovation can flourish. In communities, it fosters resilience and mutual support, and in personal relationships, it deepens understanding. In each sphere, empathy becomes a kind of shared vision, a way for people to truly “see” each other.
True vision is not limited to what the eyes perceive; it is also what the heart can hold. Empathy reminds us that sometimes, the clearest sight comes not from the eyes, but from the soul.
